Portal #31 Coal Mine was a facility owned by the U.S. Coal & Coke Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel. The company built the community of Lynch, then the world's largest coal camp, as a community for miners of Portal #31. At its height of operations in the 1940s, the mine employed more than 4000 people with the community being a virtual melting pot of people including some 38 different nationalities. Visitors can experience the mine by taking the underground mine tour to get insight into the experience of the miners who at one time worked there. In addition to the underground tour, the site includes a walking tour, a 1920s lamp house, bathhouse, and an on-site museum.

Enjoy gorgeous mountain scenery while dining in the restaurant. As a supporter of the Kentucky Proud program, we use local meats and produce when available and now serve Kentucky wine and spirits in the restaurant and Mountain Top Tavern.

Things to Do

Birding

The Cumberland Plateau hosts species found nowhere else in the state. The elevation makes it suitable for many breeding passerines typically found in northerly locations. Specialties of the region include breeding warblers, ruffed grouse, and ravens, among others. In spring, the park witnesses the peak migration of warblers through the mountains near the end of April. A good variety of less commonly observed Neotropical migrant birds are observed nesting in summer.

Gift Shop

Small selection of Kentucky-made candies, jellies, and souvenirs are available for purchase in the lobby.

Golf

The resort is home of the championship Wasioto Winds 18-hole golf course. The course, nationally ranked by Golf Digest in 2004, is a links-style course in the mountains. The course features spectacular scenery, wide cart paths, practice range, practice putting greens, and an indoor training center. Golf packages are offered year-round. Hiking

Pine Mountain is a hiker’s paradise with 12 miles of self-guided trails. Hike to Chained Rock, the Hemlock Garden or various other trails with names like Honeymoon Falls, Rock Hotel, and Timber Ridge.

Miniature Golf

The challenging 9-hole miniature golf course provides a great opportunity for whole-family fun! Open April 1 - October 31. ($)

Outdoor Theater

The Laurel Cove Amphitheater, featuring bathrooms and a dressing room, is available for rental. Its lush, peaceful setting is ideal for warm-season weddings, large gatherings, and public performances.

Picnicking

Picnic areas can be found at various scenic locations across the park. Tables, grills, rest rooms, and a covered shelter are located near Laurel Cove and the similarly outfitted Dogwood Shelter, on the park’s east end. Shelters are available for rental up to three years in advance.

Swimming

Cool off with a refreshing dip in our pool (meets ADA standards). The lodge pool is for the exclusive use of overnight park guests. Hours: 9:00 am – 9:00 pm daily, Memorial Day to Labor Day. No lifeguards on duty.
