Winter in West Memphis

West Memphis recently received 6+ inches of snow. We consider that a lot of snow. It was fun while it lasted, bringing a rare winter wonderland experience to the area. Children built snowmen, families enjoyed sledding, and social media buzzed with pictures of the transformed landscape. However, such snowfall is not typical for West Memphis, making it a brief but memorable event. The Evening Times has a great post with the ‘snowpocalypse’ pics on their Facebook page .

Since that weather is not typical, here is a better idea of what to expect.

West Memphis, Arkansas, experiences a humid subtropical climate, meaning residents enjoy four distinct seasons with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Located along the Mississippi River, the city’s weather patterns can be influenced by regional moisture levels and seasonal storm activity. Here’s what you need to know about the weather in West Memphis throughout the year.

Spring (March - May):

Spring in West Memphis brings gradually warming temperatures and an increase in rainfall. Highs range from the upper 50s in March to the upper 70s by May. Spring is also the beginning of the severe weather season, with occasional thunderstorms and tornadoes possible due to the clash of warm and cool air masses.

Summer (June - August):

Summers in West Memphis are hot and humid, with average highs reaching the upper 80s to mid-90s. High humidity levels can make temperatures feel even hotter, often exceeding 100°F with the heat index. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoons, providing brief relief from the heat but also bringing heavy rainfall and occasional strong winds.

Fall (September - November):

Autumn sees a gradual cooling trend, with highs dropping from the mid-80s in September to the mid-60s by November. Humidity levels also decrease, making this one of the most comfortable times of the year. Fall foliage typically peaks in late October to early November, offering beautiful scenery around the region.

Winter (December - February):

Winters in West Memphis are mild compared to many other parts of the country. Average highs range from the upper 40s to mid-50s, with lows occasionally dipping below freezing. Snowfall is rare but not unheard of, with occasional light snow or ice events possible. Cold fronts can bring brief periods of chilly weather, but extended freezing conditions are uncommon.
