Lea County: FUN FACT
Established in 1917, Lea County was named after Captain Joseph Calloway Lea of the New Mexico Military Institute. Early settlers lived sparsely as the county offered no access to naturally flowing water or major transportation outlets. Today, the area is known for one of the most valuable oil fields in the world, discovered in Hobbs in 1928.
