Moving My Family to Kentucky 👨‍👩‍👦

What was your motivation for moving?

Our motivation stemmed from a desire to give our children a more nostalgic, grounded childhood; One rooted in traditional values and a sense of community that seems harder to find these days.

What do you like about Eastern KY?

Eastern Kentucky is absolutely beautiful, its natural landscape is breathtaking. I finally understand what people mean when they say ‘the air is different up here.’ I’ll never forget our first night in our new home; the peace and stillness brought some of the most restful, invigorating sleep I’ve had in years. And above all, the people have been incredible; warm, hospitable, and welcoming beyond anything we expected.

Was our program helpful during the process? How so?

I’ve started this response several times, and each time I’ve come back to the same truth: my only regret is not being able to fully express how incredible our experience with the SOAR program has been. At every stage of the process, we were met with kind, knowledgeable individuals who were genuinely eager to help us explore our options, plan thoroughly, and make the move with confidence. It has truly been a privilege to be part of this program.

What advice would you give to someone looking to relocate to Eastern KY?

If you don’t currently wake up genuinely excited about what your neighborhood has to offer, don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Eastern Kentucky has a unique way of slowing things down just enough for you to truly breathe, reconnect, and rediscover what matters most. If you’re looking for beauty, community, and a sense of purpose this is the place to find it.

Eastern Kentucky - An Outdoorsman's Dream 🌲🍂🍁🦌🐿️

What was your motivation for moving?

We wanted a slower pace of life, and four seasons. We wanted to stay in the South as we are from Tennessee originally. We love the opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, and kayaking. There are several opportunities for volunteering in our community which we are looking forward to getting involved in. We have great, reliable, fiber internet for my remote job.

I'm closer to my headquarters in for quarterly meetings. People are friendly and helpful.

We are in a small town, but have plenty of dining and shopping around us. We also love being able to shop local and support small businesses and farmers for delicious Kentucky culinary delights.

What do you like about Eastern KY?

The beautiful Appalachian mountain views!

I can walk out my door and be in the Daniel Boone National Forest in 10 minutes. The fall colors are spectacular. We are also only about 30 minutes from Cumberland Falls which one of the prettiest places in the country in my opinion. East Kentucky people are really nice and caring people. The Whitley City Library is just awesome and I look forward to spending a lot more time there. Oh and how can I not mention the music. While Nashville Tennessee is known as the home of country music the best singers and songwriters are natives of our area. From Loretta Lynn to Dwight Yokum to Tyler Childers. Whitley City also has just an awesome radio station with Hay 98.3. I just feel really at home here.

Was our program helpful during the process? How so?

Definitely. Thank you all so much for all you have done to help us! It helped us explore towns that weren't on our radar. Sadly some great towns had housing shortages due to floods two years ago but in the process we found an awesome place here in McCreary County. The program is wonderful!

What advice would you give to someone looking to relocate to Eastern KY?

It's a beautiful area. Find a great realtor and be patient. I highly recommend Tammy Stevens with Weichert Ford Brothers. Determine your must haves for your home. How far away from schools, grocery stores do I want to be . Another factor is very hilly roads, you may be stuck at home several days waiting for thaws. That is not so bad either when you have a nice fire going and able to work from home the snow is very calming. Enjoy the process! It can be a little stressful but it is also a lot of fun.
