Union forces burned most of Bluffton to the ground in 1863, leaving only 15 houses and two churches. Residents rebuilt and persevered, and today Bluffton garners a reputation for being named the “Most Beautiful Town in South Carolina” as well as one of “America’s Happiest Seaside Towns,” with its close proximity to popular Hilton Head Island.
