The Cavalry Outpost Legacy

From 1865 to 1882, Fort Wallace served as a crucial United States Cavalry outpost protecting settlers traveling along the Smoky Hill Trail. Because of its strategic location, the soldiers stationed there saw constant encounters, protecting the region during a turbulent era. While the original fort buildings are gone, the history is kept vividly alive by local historians and the dedicated museum staff.
