Prehistoric Marine Fossils

Millions of years ago, Wallace County was covered by a massive inland sea. Today, the chalk and shale bluffs regularly reveal incredible marine fossils. The Fort Wallace Museum features a dedicated paleontology wing displaying local discoveries. The crown jewel is a casting of a giant Elasmosaurus, a long necked marine reptile, originally discovered in the county in 1867. Local ranchers and amateur paleontologists continue to unearth significant finds across the county.
