Jug Rock sits in the woods near Shoals with a giant sandstone table balanced on a single pillar. The formation stands about 60 feet tall and 20 feet across. Jug Rock is the largest free standing table rock formation east of the Mississippi River. Erosion shaped it for roughly 300 million years. The site rests on the edge of Hoosier National Forest. A short trail leads to the base. It is free to visit. This is just outside Shoals in Martin County in Southern Indiana.

Weekends often mean an easy road trip out this way with sturdy shoes and time to wander. Look for the small Jug Rock sign at Albright Lane and ease off highway speed. Parking sits at a tiny gravel pull off. The path down feels a little steep, so wear real shoes. Expect shade and birdsong, plus a few friendly waves from folks bound for the White River.
