Canyon Forest Nature Preserve sits in Greene County near Solsberry. It spans 68 acres with sandstone canyon walls, seasonal waterfalls, fossil beds, and ferns rare enough that the state dedicated it as a nature preserve in 2020. Sycamore Land Trust calls it one of the most significant natural areas in Indiana. Look closely and you will find walking ferns, club moss, and even wild orchids in the woods. Birdsong can include scarlet and summer tanagers. The trailhead sits off Edwards Road.
The loop is 1.6 miles and moderate with a few ups and downs. Waterfalls are seasonal, so aim for a visit after a good rain to see them flowing. Hours run daily 7 am to 7 pm, year-round, and entry is free. Dogs are welcome on leash. Parking sits in a small gravel lot for about six cars, so weekdays work well. Use the gravel lot rather than Edwards Road or the railroad. Pair it with lunch at the Yo-Ho General Store in Solsberry for an oversized tenderloin and hand scooped ice cream. Pack out everything you bring, stay on marked trails, and respect wildlife to keep these trails pristine for generations.
