Long before the gypsum mines or the naval base, the town of Shoals operated a highly unique industry based entirely on the White River. In the early 20th century, the town harvested thousands of river mussels to manufacture mother-of-pearl buttons. While the industry faded with the invention of plastics, local historical societies proudly preserve this distinct era of river-based manufacturing.
